Cannot Display This Video Mode" message

I've been getting this message on a blacked-out monitor while doing Skype video calls.  I recently installed Skype but had no poblems for weeks of usage, then suddenly the monitor would go dark and a message in the center reading:

"1: Auto Detect (Analog Input), Cannot Display This Video Mode, Optimum Resolution 1440 x 900 60 Hz"

Am unable to do anything at that point, so have to manually shut down the computer and restart  it.  Everything seems to go back to normal after restart.   Any ideas?

It appears that Skype is trying to change the screen resolution to something that is not compatible with your monitor.  There might be a default setting within Skype that when you open it, it changes to maximized view at that specific resolution...which when your screen does not support it, shows you that error.
