Chipset heatsink not detected msg; it it dead?

My Dimension4600, several years old, announced the "Alert !Chipset heatsink not detected. System halted!" this morning and the dell support site explains this means the retaining clip was is not connected correctly.  Is this something I can repair/get repaired or should I not waste money pursuing it??  All advice appreciated --

First open the case and check if the chipset's heatsink 'Z' clip brackets is still connected to the motherboard, if the clip not connected, then you would need to replace the motherboard, or you may be able to repair the bracket, using the 'workaround' discussed here, it's a for a 4600c/4700c, but the basics are the same, you would need to find the metal 'U' bracket.

Instead of replacing the motherboard, because the 4600 is an obsolete system, maybe you should consider replacing it.
