DELL XPS 410 (2006) Upgrade
I am wanting to upgrade my XPS 410 Desktop. Before I list my wants and current specs I need to state that I realize there are so many posts on upgrading this desktop. My problem is that I need someone to simplify computer terminology for me, haha. I used to work with computers when I was younger and used to make websites and such but I've completely forgotten everything so I would need to look up what everything means if you do post some terms I don't understand.
I want to upgrade the desktop just enough to be able to run smoothly. I don't need it super fast but right now its very laggy. I just got it back from my parents house and I have not turned it on since 2007 or so. I've been working with it up upgrade windows and all the required software. I am only wanting to run an old photography software on it and a game or two. I have younger kids so I do not have enough time to spend on the computer. I'm wondering if its even worth it to spend the money on memory and graphics card or should I just purchase a Windows CD to install on my 2012 iMac and run bootcamp on it. I ran the diagnostics test on my Dell and it said I need to replace my hard drive.

You can find a list of compatible processors for the XPS 410 in a post by Chris M HERE
Prior to installing the processor, you need to upgrade the BIOS to the latest version, 2.5.3, because with version 2.5.1, new CPU Support was added.
Note: The Core 2 Quad Q6700, is not listed, but is compatible.
The XPS 410 supports a maximum of 4gb [4 x 1gb modules] of compatible DDR2, see here:

The GeForce 9600 GT is no longer manufactured, but you may find one on eBay.

Upgrading XPS 410
The hardware is getting old and Windows Vista is also falling into obsolesce.
You can get more RAM so you need 2×2 GB kits = $31.99×2=$63.98:

You also need to pay for the HDD or SSD.
Also you might want to consider upgrading to Windows 10 32 Bit, Windows 10 is only available in the Technical Preview currently and Windows Vista is not eligible for the free upgrade. You may get a discount for the RTM version of Windows 10 if you upgrade from the Windows 10 Technical Preview however:

Note a second hand OptiPlex 760 or 780 (780 is better) can be found on eBay with 4 GB and a Windows 7 license (which will be eligible to the free Windows 10 Upgrade) and a better processor for $99 which is a far better buy:

Sad to see inaccurate info always posted in these xps 410 / dimension 9200 threads. The xps 410 recognises up to 8gb ram, not 4gb. Maximum processor is the QX6800, not Q6700 / Q6600 as frequently posted. It can run Windows 8.1 64 bit and will be upgradable to Windows 10 64 bit.
I own a Dimension 9200 and fully upgraded, graphics card and ssd included, it's even powerful enough to run newly released games on the highest settings despite having been released in 2006.
That said, natakuc4 if you want to simply get an acceptable PC cheap as possible, upgrading the xps 410 from what you have is not the way to go. I agree with the advice of getting a new (used) PC.

Indeed, as previously posted last March, there has been a lot of misinformation about what the XPS410 will take (upgrades). Of course, this PC is also known as the dimension 9200.
As with the previous poster (last March), I have done incremental upgrades on my 410 through the years. It now includes a SSD, a NVIDIA Geforce GTX 650Ti graphics card, an upgrade to the CPU to an Intel Quad Core Q6600, and a larger PSU. Of course, I've also upgraded Windows several times, and now running Windows 10 on this XPS410. It still runs great and is like a low end i5.
Having said all that, I must agree with the previous poster in saying that if a person still has the original specs on a XPS410 or Dimension9200 (and now simply want a faster acceptable PC as cheap as possible), they may want to consider just buying a new system.
My XPS410 is about all it ever can be. Not sure if I will, but may bump the memory up from 6GB DDR2 SDRAM up to the maximum that this system will hold to 8GB.

"inaccurate info always posted" is inaccurate. I tend to go by what I have used or still have in my possession. Dell changes motherboards and chip-sets so there may be versions of the board that are not supporting specific features. Especially when espousing Ram or CPU or other "upgrades" it is prudent to also post Motherboard Part Number, Bios Version, Ram Vendor, Speed, Ranks, Density. The S Spec of any cpu that works etc. The now excessive cost of 1 Gig, 2 Gig, 4 Gig non buffered low Density Single Rank or Dual Rank Ram makes many systems uneconomical to upgrade if you don't already have the ram. T3400's for example where the 4 gig modules cost $200 each.
