Dell 435mt CPU Upgrade question...

Is it possible to upgrade from my current i7 940 CPU at 2.93ghz to something like an i7950 or i7 975 Extreme Edition on the stock 435mt motherboard?

Thanks!

Charlie901,
According to the 435MT specs its motherboard uses the Intel X58+ICH10R chipset. The list of compatible processors can be found here. Click Compatible Products then Processors in the table on the left side of the page.

Prior to installing the processor in the 435MT, did you check that BIOS version 1.1.2, or higher, that has updated Intel CPU Micro Code, was installed?

It appears that the 435MT was shipped with an i7-975 before.

From Intel's page on the X58 I/O Controller chip.

"The Intel X58 Express Chipset supports 45nm Intel Core i7 processor family at 6.4 GT/s and 4.8 GT/s speeds"

So I don't think it'll support Hex Core i7 that are 32nm like the 970.

Highest 4.8GT/s is the 960.  965 & 975 are the Extreme versions with 6.4GT/s.  Can anyone verify those will work in the 435MT?
