Dell 4600 Win XP (Pro) not able to reboot from a back up (clone) External Had Disk

Hi,

I have downloded a system back up freeware Macrium Reflect  from CNET at http://download.cnet.com/Macrium-Reflect-Free/3001-2242_4-10845728.html?idl=n&spi=102af850c7006a903f8e2b0d8ffa8f43.I have successfully created a Clone Disk of my Drive C to and External Drive Western Digital Passport.

( This Macrium system said that the Cloning was successfully done)

However, when I try to test the reboot from this external drive, the DOS keep on say F1 Retry or F2 go to Set up Menu.

Is there any solution for this?

If this problem cannot be fix is it that I can'tt even use this disk to restore the system in an event of system failure?

Thank you

Hi MR. LOW,

Welcome to the Dell Community.

The Macrium Reflect Backup software only backs up the Disc Image and does not create a bootable file. For the external hard drive to be used as the medium for restoring the computer, it should have a bootable image for windows.

The Macrium Reflect freeware does not have the option for Recovery from Boot Menu, however, the Standard version does.

Please refer to this link for the feature comparison.

Moreover, as far as booting from the external hard drive is concerned. This system does not support booting from a USB device as it is one of the older computers.

You could request for the OS CD's  if you need to perform an operating system re-installation and then restore your data on the hard drive.
