Dell 730x Motherboard Replacement for i7 965 Extreme

My Dell 730x currently has factory installed a MSI - MS-7543 Ver : OC Motherboard.
The Memory Limitation is 6GB. I want to replace the Motherboard with the ability to expand up to 24GB.

I have a i7 965 Extreme 3.20Ghz Processor maxed out with 6GB of Ram.

I was looking at ASUS P6T7:

And replacing the memory with 12 GB of CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) .

Any thoughts on the ease of upgrade. Will it be a simple swap out of the MB?

Anyone done this on this model with the big aluminum case?

Thanks in advance,
Jon

I believe 730's are supposed to be motherboard swappable. That being said you will need a full retail version of windows either full or OEM as your Dell copy cannot be used on non Dell motherboards.

Just so you know the 730x can take up to 12GB of ram. Just before they were discontinued they offered it with 12GB and I have seen a few on the Outlet with 12GB. But the 4GB sticks are a little pricey.

If you replace the systemboard with a retail you can not use an ATXe (extended) as it wil;l not fit, you need to run a standard or mini ATX. I think you will will also lose the FX lighting. I have asked Dell about how to get it to work for when I make the upgrade sometime down the road and was told that they only provide you the ability to replace it with a retail but have not done any testing and will not attempt to either, if you do it it is at your own risk and they will not help in the swap at all with and tech info on how to get the rest of the Dell parts to work.

Thanks for the information. Now I am just wondering if I should upgrade the RAM.

Currently have 6GB Tri-Channel DDR3 at 1066MHZ (3x2GB DIMM)
