Dell 8910 Upgrades with photos for those looking to get this machine
I wanted a desktop to replace an aging dell dimension e520. It is not going to be used for a gaming machine. It will be used for audio recording in an audio production workspace.
I picked up the base model XPS 8910 Cyber Monday. it has the I5-6400 CPU.
Installed:
-32GB Crucial RAM
-512GB Samsung 950 PRO with a PCIE Express card
-Samsung 500GB M.2 Sata III - placed on the built in M2 slot on the Mobo
-Asus Geforce GT 1060 6GB Turbo Edition VR Ready Dual HDMI 2.0 DP 1.4 Auto-Extreme Graphics Card
EVGA Supernova 850Watt P2 level 80+ Platinum PSU
I removed the HDD caddies that were in the chassis as I did not need them. the 1 TB of SSDs I am putting in are sufficient for me for what this desktop will be used for.
When I got the machine, I immediately removed the parts I was replacing. installed the SSD and booted with a thumb drive with the microsoft windows tool to load a fresh copy of windows onto the 950.
All that went with no issues. After the load of windows I proceeded to install the drivers and updates as needed.
The machine has been up and running 24/7 since last wednesday. no issues and the boot up and operation has been excellent. No overheating issues, no BSODs, no freezes, or any other nonsense.

I agree with you. I dont se why it would not work.
If you are concerned about fitting the PSU in the cage, just look at the measurements of the one I have in the photos and match those up the the psu in question.

B keyed units are SATA not PCI-E.
This card works with either. The 850 unit is B keyed and the 950 unit is M keyed

Hi, just curious - is the Samsung 500GB M.2 Sata III that you put in the M.2 slot an 850 Evo? Is it a B/M keyed drive, or just a B key? I was under the impression that the XPS 8910 mobo uses the Z170 chipset, so the M.2 port should be capable of PCIE 4x - in which case why not put the 950 Pro straight into the M.2 slot?
Thanks!

That's the one i put in there.
I didnt want to use any spinning hard drives nor did i want to use any of the conventional larger sata SSDs. Since this m.2 slot was there i chose to use the x4 card slot AND the m.2 slot.

If you look closely at the unversal card I linked the B keyed is SATA not PCI-E.
M keyed only is PCI-E

I also have a 8910 XPS and I want to add SSD.
Did you just connect it to the motherboard ? Do I need any special screwdriver to connect it? Some guy posted that a special screwdriver is needed for m2 connector.
Thanks

marctronixx - how did you connect power to the slimline DVD player with the new power supply? The connector with the OEM power supply is a 2 wire P4 connector. Did the EVGA power supply include this connector or did you buy an adaptor?
Thanks

Koeven,
I did connect the drive to the EVGA. I used this cable from amazon:
