Dell Dimension 8400 - Ethernet capability
Please excuse this computer illiterate question!
Can I use the broadband jack as an ethernet slot to connect to another computer to transfer data? I don't think this model (10 years old) has a dedicated ethernet port.

You could certainly connect two PC's directly using Ethernet, however, given your "computer illiterate" remark, it is going to be easier to go through a router/switch.

You could also use a "bridged" USB cable (aka: USB networking or USB transfer cable) to connect the 2 systems.
NOTE: A bridged USB cable is NOT the same as a standard USB cable. A bridged cable has a small circuit inside the cable. Do not connect a "standard" USB cable between 2 PCs.
Dell and various other companies offer USB transfer cables.
