Dell Dimension 9200 with Windows Vista - blank screen

My Dell Dimension 9200 with Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit) is not starting up correctly, the screen is covered with a pattern of red dots, and the Windows Vista symbol appears as a screen saver as if the computer is in hibernation mode. This has followed repeated incidents of the computer shutting down, with a message on the screen stating that it was shut down to prevent the computer from being damaged, and that there was a problem with the display driver. It was possible to restore it, but the problem recurred and now appears to be worse. The monitor has been tested with other equipment, and is working fine.

Can anyone advise how I can start up the computer normally or in safe mode so that some functionality can be obtained? Have tried to restore the computer using the supplied operating system disc, and this has not worked.

Hi,

You can check your system in BIOS and see if you get the same issue regarding screen there. Follow the steps below to access the BIOS:

  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as you see the blue Dell logo start tapping the ‘F2’ key which is at the top of the keyboard.
  • If you wait too long and the Microsoft Windows appears, then continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Now shutdown your computer and try again.
  • After this a new window will appear which is the BIOS. You can only use the arrow keys of the keyboard to navigate between the options as the mouse is not functional in this mode.
  • Check if you face the same issue there as well.

If you are facing the same issue in system BIOS, it is an issue with the video card of your computer. If the screen appears fine in BIOS, you can boot your computer in 'Safe mode' and can uninstall and reinstall the video drivers for your computer.

To access 'Safe mode' you can follow the steps below:

  • Restart the computer.
  • Tap the F8 key on the keyboard during the boot process until you see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen.
  • Select “Safe Mode with Networking” from the menu using the arrow keys on the keyboard and then press the key.
  • Select the user account at the log in screen.
  • Click on “Start” and right click on “Computer”.
  • Click on “Manage”.
  • Click on “Device Manager”.
  • Under “Display adapters”, you will find the video driver listed.
  • Right click on it and click on “uninstall”. (Check and make a note of the driver installed on your system and re-install the video driver from the below steps accordingly).
  • Check the box to delete the software.
  • Restart your system and click on the below link: http://dell.to/OukFUO
  • Enter the Service Tag of your system and select the operating system.
  • You will find the video driver under “Video”.
  • Click on the video driver depending on the video card your system has. (Install the same video driver which you uninstalled from “Device Manager”.
  • Click on “Download File”.
  • Select “For Single File Download via Browser”.
  • Click on “Download Now”.
  • Save the driver on your desktop.
  • Once the driver is saved on desktop, right click on it and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Install the video driver by following the on screen instructions.
  • Check if the issue is resolved or not.

Also please let me know the status of diagnostic indicators on the back of system tower. (as an example image is shown below)

We do not seem to have diagnostic lights on the back, we have 4 lights on the front. Three of these light up, one shows the icon of a disc.

We have tried to follow your suggested route, but the computer does not get beyond the screen for selecting a "safe mode" option.

During the test suggested by another advisor, we have received the following error codes;

5300:0119

5300:061F

5300:0820

5900:022D

5A00:0419

1863:1518

1863:0F18

1863:1018

Are you able to suggest any other actions?

thanks

We have tested the computer as suggested, and the problem has not been resolved. The hard disc is ok according to the test, but the computer does not open in safe mode, and does not open normally.
