Dell M-UAV-DEL8 mouse (on XPS 435T/900D freezes. What can I do to prevent?

I have a Dell mouse M-UAV-DEL8 J660D in a Dell XPS 435T/900D purchased circa 2011 - 2012. Mouse freezes about 15 seconds of every 3 minutes of use, for from 1 to 10 seconds, often but not always making a dinging sound. Pretty much always has done this, but it's getting worse (or less tolerable?). I occasionally get message saying USB device not recognized which stops computer, nothing I can do except turn it off. Updating driver or following similar threads hasn't resulted in any change or info on what is going on. Would really appreciate understanding what is happening, what I can do about it...
