Dell OptiPlex 3040 Windows 7 MDT Problems
Hello
I am using MDT 2013. I've imported the driver pack for the OptiPlex 3040 from Dell for Windows 7 x64. After MDT installs the OS, it reboots into Windows to begin initialization but it never finishes. Instead it reboots again and goes into the Dell Diagnostics utility and runs a test on memory.
After the test runs, it tries to boot into Windows and I end up selecting "last know good config." It finally loads windows but then none of the USB ports work. I have to remote into the pc to manually install the USB and chipset drivers to finish the MDT deployment process. This has happened on multiple machines and is a repeatable process. Is anyone else having this issue?

Did you either manage to resolve this issue? Or did you always have to go through last good config?
I'm trying to get Windows 7 x86 to install on both a OptiPlex 3040 and a Latitude E5570 with no joy. The previous models were fine.

This is not a Dell issue and Not supported here. There is no such thing as a single one size fits all version MDT.

per the MDT support lifecycle, a new major version will drop support for MDT 2012 Update 1 which still supports legacy platforms (Windows 7)

We just got the OptiPlex 3040's in here too and are seeing precisely the same problem deploying with MDT. However I can't even get to the desktop, after the diagnostic run Last Known Good Config, or Normal Boot both result in the machine rebooting before it hits the desktop.
I grabbed the A01 driver cab from here today:

Running MDT 2103 U1 using model specific driver selection targeting only the folder that matches the model string "OptiPlex 3040" which has the above cab file imported to it.
Googled up this issue with the Optiplex 5040 which seems very similar:

Suggestion is to install the following on the base image:

Turns out this is just bad USB3 drivers again...
I watched a complete PC image from start to finish and this time caught a BSOD which I swear wasn't actually appearing the other times. The error referenced one of the USB3 driver files, unfortunately didn't catch the precise file name (before it auto rebooted). On reboot the BSOD doesn't appear again, you just get the Windows error box when it is trying to "Configure Devices" before it reaches the desktop.
Deleted all the USB3 drivers out of the MDT 3040 driver repository folder and this time it did complete the imaging process. As long as your peripherals aren't in the USB3 ports you will still have some USB functionality for kb/mouse. The image process still looked a little different to usual, will need to confirm that it's 100% OK on Monday and will report back.

Ok everyone I think I fixed the issue. The OptiPlex 3040 only supports AHCI mode, not IDE in the BIOS. I created and captured my base image (using MDT 2013 Update 1) on a Hyper-V VM using IDE mode. Hyper-V doesn't currently support SATA mode on a virtual hard disk. I downloaded and installed VMWare workstation (one of my old tools from previous job) for a 30 day trial and recreated my base image using a virtual hard disk set to SATA.
This way, when Win7 loads on the VM, both SATA and IDE controllers are present and the registry settings are set properly too. After capturing my new image I loaded it onto the 3040 multiple times with no issues.
I also had the problem with the USB 3.0 drivers but resolved that by loading them into my WinPE boot image as well as the driver group for that particular model. Hopefully this helps you guys experiencing the same issue.
