Dell Optiplex 745 and Altec Lansing XT1 USB speakers

I know these are laptop speakers but I previously had a Dell Dimension 2350 and they worked fine. Now it sees the speakers and says their ready to use; the light is on; but no sound. Is there something I have to do or a certain USB they need plugged into?
