Dell Precision 390 clock multiplier

I have just fitted at 2.4hgz E6600 insteard of a 1.8ghz cpu.

The new chip is still running at 1.8ghz and the clock multiplier is not going above 7x.

What do I need to change in the bios to get the 2.4ghz cpu running at full speed?

I have 2.6.0 bios.

The mb is 0DN075 and has an i975x rev A0.

First off, is BIOS 2.6.0 the latest version ?

Do you see an option for SpeedStep in BIOS setup? "SpeedStep provides settings for changing the processor power consumption and operating frequency."

Beyond that Dell BIOS typically doesn't allow you to change clock speeds...

What speed is the installed memory?  It may be the limiting factor.

There are no settings for me in the bios. :emotion-4:

Looks like it just took another reboot for the bios to shift up to 9x clock!

Running at 2.4ghz now.

Actually I have just stuffed a quad core in there. £10! Upgrades are cheap for 10 year old tech!

Just need some 666mhz DDR2 ram now. 333mhz fitted at the moment. I should be able to get 4x2gb for about £15.

The RX480 gpu works great in this old machine. HL Black Mesa running at 60-120fps @ 1080p everything on max.

I'm not really sure I want to spend £500 on a new machine just yet....

This old Dell has been very reliable.

Bear in mind that DDR2 667 RAM runs at 333 -- that's what double data rate means.  What you now have IS DDR2-667.

Ah, I did not realise that! Confusing data rate with clock...  The ebay listings always say 667Mhz when what they mean is 333Mhz, 667 Mt/s?

Good job the used ram is so cheap these days!

Still, I have 8GB instead of 4GB now, for £15, which is ok. I might get £5 back selling the 4x1GB that I take out.

So is 333Mhz the fastest a Dell 390 will go?

Required Ram is based on Front Side Bus.

If Double your Front Side Bus is 800mhz then you need PC2-6400.

The clock depends on the chipset and the FSB of the specific processor.

March 29th, 2017 05:00

OK so CPU-Z says my bus is running at 266Mhz and the Rated FSB is 1063Mhz.

The MB is 0DN075 with a i975x A0 chipset and Southbridge is 82801GB(ICH7/R) A1

CPU is a Q6600 2.4Ghz Core 2 Quad.

Also, can a Dell Precision 390 use Server RAM? I know it can run ECC RAM, but I'm not sure if so called Server RAM is the same thing as ECC RAM?
