Dell Precision 470 Processor Upgrade
Good Afternoon
My current computer is a Dell Precision 470 workstation. Its motherboard is a OP7996 and is currently running two Intel Xeon (Nocona) 2.8 GHz cpu's with 604 mPGA sockets. Is this mobo capable of running Intel Xeon 2.8 Ghz DualCore processors? Any help greatly appreciated as i have read so many conflicting reports on whether or not this upgrade is possible.
Thanks.:emotion-1:

Good Afternoon
As promised this is my feedback regarding processor upgrade. After searching various sources I managed to secure a pair of matching Xeon Paxville DualCore with the following specification: ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=27202
However when I powered up after installing them I got the "incompatible Processor" message. Its not the end of the world but the 130 dollars they cost could have being spent on other items.
As a general observation could I say the following. Over a 20 year period the majority of the PC's owned by me are Dell. Touch wood I have never had a problem with any. However the case in point if you decide to upgrade your processor it is next to impossible to identify which one will work with your specific computer. Surely by now Dell should have a utility that scans your computer and identifies the exact processors that are compatible with your mobo?
Any comments appreciated.

It would seem that Dell is in the business of only selling new computers, not upgrading them. :emotion-6:

The only way you can run the SL8MA dual core processors in the Precision 470 is to get a 0XC838 version of the motherboard and upgrade BIOS to A07. Been there, done that. I`ve running two of these bad boys in my Precision 470, 8GB RAM, Windows 7 64 bit.

Get a new mobo. They can be found for cheap. Never hurts to keep your original as a backup.
