Dell Precision 490 - pros & cons?

Hi,

Is this pc still limited to sub-TB individual hard drives please? I know you can run 3 drives in this desktop but the original specs list a combined max of 1.5TB storage?

Are all these 490s potentially 32GB memory pc's please?

Thanks.

Hi,

Excuse my tardiness as you may well have upgraded to a completely new system by now. :/

You'd need an additional caddy, different from the other two.
P/N: 0JH670

It's mounted in the secondary optical bay. :)

Dan. :)

Hi KR236RK,

Thank you for writing to us.

We would recommend to populate Hard Drives as per the capacity specified in System Manual.

The system may support and work with an individual Hard Drive of up to 2TB. However, would recommend to upgrade the Hard Drives as per the Dell Recommended and tested specifications.

2TB and smaller drives work fine.

32 Gig of Registered Buffered ECC would be cost prohibitive but it is supported.  For the cost of 4 gigs of ram you could get a Precision T3400 or better T3500

$285 X 4 = $1140

Thanks. Surely that's a catch-22? The Precision T3400 or T3500 would need its own Ram, systems rarely  (if ever) come with full Ram, usually you get one or two low value memory modules slotted in, then you have to immediately upgrade with more memory?

... so if I installed a 2TB HDD for the master drive 'C', what drives could I theoretically have in the rest of the case please? Two more 2TB drives, 2 x 1TB drives, or what please?

Thanks

The 490 is not like the 690 with 6 bays.  You can install 2 X 2TB drives.

Thanks, 2 drives. I got three at this link. What about the third sata cable please?
