Dell XPS 2720 HDMI in - possible to get 25660x1440?

Hi,

I have a HP laptop with a DisplayPort output port which supports 2560x1440

I have connected this to a XPS2720 using a HP DisplayPort -> HDMI adapter and a Hi-Speed HDMI cable (supporting up to 4k resolution)

However, the maximum resolution on offer seems to be 1920 x 1080.

The issue seems to be related to the max resolution the laptop 'sees'. Is there any ways to resolve/get around this? Any ideas on what to try?

(I have an updated version of the Intel graphics driver which does not allow you to set custom resolutions.... Thanks Intel...)

(Related question - is it possible to use the XPS2720 as an external monitor without powering up the PC part of the 2720 system? I have not had any sucess in doing so?)

I also bought an active DisplayPort -> HDMI adaptor - this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DOZHLAA/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It now works - sort of. Steps taken:

-  The I/O and motherboard was replaced by Dell - solved the problem BUT sound in via HDMI is not working - Dell has tried but are unable to fix the problem.

- Furthermore, I sometimes needs to reboot the laptop to be able to connect it

- I replaced the cable with a high quality HDMI cablejust in case - I bought one from Bluejeans cables

Dual Link DVI is required for 4k  Single HDMI is not sufficient.

Has anybody managed to get 2560x1440 across the HDMI into the 2720?

It seems from this post it is possible but custom profiles need to be created.

As stated above, I have got this to work with 2760 x 1440 - see the steps taken above

If someone stumbles across this, as things currently stand you can create a Custom Resolutions in the Intel HD Graphics Control Panel and use a standard HDMI cable to render 2560 x 1440.  The only thing you have to remember is to set the refresh rate to 30p instead of 60 (59).

Best of luck,
