Dell XPS 8500 Hard Drive Obnoxious Noise (ST2000DM001-9YN)
I have owned a Dell XPS 8500 for just over a year now. Just after my purchase I began noticing a loud "chirping sound" coming from the desktop while it was running idle. I would notice it at night while I was trying to sleep as it was loud enough to wake me up. It seems to reoccur every few minutes or so until I resume using my computer or shut it down. It is most definitely coming from the hard drive which is a Seagate with a model # ST2000DM001-9YN.
After doing plenty of research online I have come across many threads on the Seagate forums where others complain about a "chirping" issue. It appears that the issue is related to the APM (advanced power management) system and is resolved by a firmware update offered through the Seagate website in the link below.

Dell needs to come out with their version of this update because the seagate firmware update isn't compatible with the dell firmware that came preinstalled. Links below are a couple of the sources I have read and videos demonstrating the same exact sound coming from my computer. P.S. I dont want a replacement HD. It isn't broken. I as well as other have the same problem and need a firmware fix. I even found another thread on the dell forums where someone was having this issue and was just told to get a new HD. That thread can be found here http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/disk-drives/f/3534/t/19468596.aspx?PageIndex=1

This is mainly a user-to-user forum with some input from Dell. Your best bet is to contact Dell Tech Support directly via phone or email.
