Dell XPS 8700 RAM upgrade or addition
Hi everyone, I am newbie here. Recently I need to upgrade my ram on XPS8700. And I went to Best Buy and bought a "PNY - 2-Pack 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 DIMM Unbuffered Non-ECC Desktop Memory Kit". It does not work, computer can not power on with flashing orange lights.
So I went to Crucial website, it recommends me to use a DDR3L RAM. I saw all the DDR3Ls are for laptops. Could it be used in my desktop? And my current RAM is Hyundai. Could it be mixed with other brand like Crucial or Kingston?
My pc specs:
i7 4770
GTX 645
8GB RAM
Dell Inc. 0KWVT8 mobo
1TB HHD

Do provide us your system tag#, email address and name via private message,by clicking on my name in blue and then select send a private message.
You can mix different makes of modules

ddr3 L is just low voltage which is fine in the 8700. It did not come originally with this but it means the memory works at the specified timing on 1.3 volt vs 1.5 volt.
If you buy from crucial and it doesn't work they will certainly refund your money.
www.crucial.com/.../CT7343957 for an 8GB upgrade ( 2x4GB)
or
www.crucial.com/.../CT7350422 for a 16 GB kit.
Install the new memory in matching color slots.
This should work with your existing memory so you can add 8 GB or add 16 GB

I thought I posted a response, but maybe the links to crucial got it moderated,
I would go to Crucial, www DOT crucial DOT com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/xps-8700
and pick the KIT for either 8GB upgrade (2x4GB) or 16GB ( 2x8GB) and buy the least expensive one they have. DDR3 1600 CL11 is what the system wants and from what I've read it is hit and miss to get different timing or speed memory to work.
The page shown doesn't list all the choices. Click the "view more compatible choices" button and you'll find everything.

Oh, one more thing. Make sure to keep the new kit and the current memory in matched banks, or in other words use the same color memory slots for the matching memory.
