Dell XPS 8700 USB3.0 Specifications

The XPS 8700 has 4 USB .0 ports in the rear and 2 USB3.0 ports on the front of the computer.

Does anyone know whether all the USB3.0 ports are coming off the Z87 chipset, or has Dell added a discrete chip for all or some of the USB3.0 ports?

I'm only interested in what the USB3.0 ports are; whether they are native to the chipset or if Dell is using a discrete chip.

I'm not interested in USB2.0.

Thanks.

Can't answer your question directly, but...

The older XPS 8500 has a separate chipset driver for USB3.0 but the new 8700 doesn't have a separate USB3.0 driver listed. Only driver listed is for the Intel Lynx Point Z87 Chipset.

You can infer whatever you want... :emotion-5:

Thanks for the reply ROHE,

I have looked at the differences between the XPS 8500 and the XPS 8700 and noted the driver differences. Dell does not show a USB3.0 driver on the XPS 8700 support page for Windows 8. However, Windows 8 has support for USB3.0 so it's not needed.

(There is an Intel USB3.0 driver for Windows 7x64 listed on Dell's site for XPS 8700, but not on the normal support page for XPS 8700. Had to do a little digging for that.)

In all probablity. the XPS 8700 does come with native USB3.0 for all ports, but have not been able to confirm it. It's bugging me a little don't knowing whether the USB3.0 is native, partially native, or whatever.

The Z77 chipset features integral USB 3.0; I'm assuming the same is true for the Z87. Intel has a special USB 3.0 driver that is installed after the regular chipset drivers.

Why does it even matter, as long as USB3.0 works?

Some implementations may be faster than others.

I notice that with onboard SATA 6gb/s.

J03 - Do you have a link to the Windows 7 USB 3.0 driver?
