Dell XPS Studio 8000 Memory Issue on Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit

I am running Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit on my XPS Studio 8000, I have 6GB of RAM installed, however BIOS sees it as 3GB, Windows says I have 6GB Installed, but only 2.99 Usable. Can anyone help me please, I had Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit and this didn't happen to me. Please help.

Did you do an "in place" upgrade to Win 8 from a prior version of Windows or did you reformat the hard drive and do a clean install of Win 8?

There was a similar problem with an XPS 435mt recently where the user upgraded from Vista to Win 7. Windows said there were 6 GB installed with only 1.4 GB usable. The solution there was to wipe the drive and do a clean installation.

If you decide to do that, you must back up all your personal files on external media (USB hard drive, DVDs ,etc) because everything will be lost. And you'll need the disks and product keys for all your software (eg, Microsoft Office) in order to reinstall after installing Win 8.

You can find a useful guide to installing Windows on a Dell PC here.

EDIT: I fixed the link.

Hi dmvannessjr,

Welcome to the Community!

Thanks for reaching out to us and apologies for any inconveniences it caused you. Regarding the issue, it is very rare that this happens. What you need to do now is to reseat the memory modules and Flash the BIOS. You can check this link http://dell.to/XXKy7q for the most updated drivers and downloads. Kindly revert back to me once done.

Thanks and Regards,

Have you done a clean Installation of the Windows 8 or just upgraded from Windows 7?

Thanks and Regards,

Most likely, this issue is caused by an upgrade and not a clean install. I would suggest that you start backing up your files for a clean Installation. Let me know if things work well once done.

Have you mixed memory types? Which brand of memory are you using?

The Studio 8000 is notorious for this issue: en.community.dell.com/.../19302304.aspx

Have you tried doing a full clean install of Win 8 as some of us have recommended here?

Be sure to back up your personal files on external hard drive or DVDs first.

The OP mentions a clean install.

This is a known issue with the XPS 8000 motherboard, and typically the remedy was replacing it.
