Dell precision 490 workstation

Hi all,

I have a precision 490 and i would like to update the graphics card for light gaming and photo and graphics manipulation. But it the only thing holding me back is that on the spec sheet for the 490 the graphics card support only apparently supports up to 512 Mb of memory. Is this true? or is that just the provided card memory? My card has 512 Mb of memory as it is the card that came with the pc.

The card i had originally looked at was the Palit Geforce GTX 650. which has a 1GB of on board memory, but if the mother board only reads 512Mb of it then I wont buy it! By the way I'm using Windows 7 pro 64bit. the power of the board should be OK, as it wants a minimum PSU power of 400W and i have a 750W PSU. and the motherboard in the 490 will take a graphics card that requires a power of up to 150W and the max power of the card is 64W.

thanks for any help.

R7 250 1GB  works fine

R9 270 works with stock power supply.

Radeon R9 290 requires updated power supply.

The spec sheet stat 512 is for the card you have, not what the computer can support. Any video card will have its own amount of ram

so i will be able to use a 1Gb card and still potentially use all 1Gb of on board memory?
