Per the Dell Tech's suggestion (see here attached)  wqe purchased this video card from Dell:   EVGA GeForce 9400 GT 1 GB DDR2 PCI Graphics Card...We asked Twice to confirm with him that we did NOT require a New Power supply to run this:

08/29/2010 02:46:10PM Agent (E&A_Ernesto): "I recommend rthis GeForce **** GT 1 GB DDR2 PCI Graphics Card at $89.99"
08/29/2010 02:48:35PM Carlos SAMPER: "I've been getting Soooo many sugestions from diff Forums (I know big mistake..) recommending half a dozen cards....and telling me I have to Upgrade my power supply as well from the 250w this computer has to all the to 450w...am I going to have to do this"
08/29/2010 02:49:24PM Agent (E&A_Ernesto): "Yes the card that I recommend is for your computer as checked by the model."
08/29/2010 02:50:59PM Carlos SAMPER: "So NO power supply upgrade correct?....sorry for pressing this point.....also will a Dummy like me be able to install this or should I have a computer tech do this? ...say like at bestbuy's geek squad?"
08/29/2010 02:51:20PM Agent (E&A_Ernesto): "no upgrade for the power supply."

Carlos SAMPER: "Great!!!!"

So like a dope I go ahead and buy this.......I go to my tech who is doing this Upgrade and he says it DOES require a different Power Supply an Upgrade to  300W and also because the ones he has won't fit inside the computer .. too big..he says Only dell can provide the proprietary correct one.......I'm so confused..... now I'm stuck with this Graphic card a purchase Order they refuse to Cancel.....

How can I go forward with this? Is there a Power supply out there that I can get to fit this Card's needs and with these upgrade the computer? Dell Online Tech Service could not come up with one?

Thank you for any help

The e310 desktop, does not use a Dell proprietary power supply.

The 3100/e310 PC's have an open back panel, you are use most standard generic stock ATX power supplies, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin motherboard main connector, with or without the on/off switch and two SATA power connectors.

The power supplies can be purchased from most local, or online computer stores.

The instructions for replacing the power supply are HERE. <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

I got this from our "Best buy" tech thats' why  I sent the previous email...guess I need a new tech....what power supply could you reccommend for us to go with the Dell ordered Video card... EVGA GeForce 9400 GT PCIe x16 Graphics Card from EVGA®

First, the Dimension e310/3100 does not support ANY PCIe x16 video cards, the motherboard does not have a PCIe x 16 slot, it only has 1xPCIe x1 slot, and 2xPCI slots, you need a PCI video card.

If you run a search of the forum, you will find that the Dimension e310/3100 does not use a Dell proprietary power supply.

Read the sample post HERE

PCI cards are very outdated.   PCI-->AGP-->PCIE v.1-->PCIE v.2.  You can see where they are.  IT is 15 year old technology.  If you require PCI cards, you can look at these,  Very overpriced IMHO.

Yep, I think you were.

You need to contact Dell and RMA the PCIe x16 card and buy a PCI card.

The Dimension e319/3100 is not a gaming system, it has a 230w power supply and does not  have either a PCIe x16, or AGP slot, you would need to install a PCI card that limits your choice of video cards.

The PCI card shown HERE: JATON VIDEO-338PCI-DVI GeForce 6200 256MB 64-bit DDR PCI Low Profile Ready Video Card  should work fine with the default 230w power supply and meets your requirements

One of the better PCI video cards is shown HERE: SPARKLE SP95GT1024D2LHP GeForce 9500 GT 1GB 128-bit DDR2 PCI HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card , but to use this card, you would need to upgrade the power supply to a 450w+ unit.

Bev.

So I guess I might as well go for broke and get the “Sparkle PCI card” and the 450w+ power supply…..any suggestions on what power supply to get Brand name Model #?  Also will this affect my computer as a “Whole” …..will ALL Other features (ie. email, internet surfing etc) stay the same?  I mean can my computer/processor handle this Upgrade…..or will it go up in flames !!!

Thanx for all the advice.

You cannot put an X16 Card in an E310 because it does not have an X16 video slot.

Rather than Spend $100 on a good power supply Find a Used Optiplex GX620 Tower

and buy a Radeon 4670 PCIE video card.

a 32 bit 33mhz PCI Geforce 8400 will not perform well.

That would be the only card that would fit.

This problem is not limited to E310.

The GX520 series is hobbled like the E310 with the PCIE slot removed from the motherboard.

The GX620 Tower Series can use a

VisionTek 900251 Radeon HD4670 1GB PCI

Ok I pulled the cover off an E310 in the office.

It DOES have an X1 slot.

That means a

HIS H435F512EP Radeon HD 4350 iFan Video Card
512MB DDR2, PCI Express x1 2.0, DVI, VGA, HDMI

is probably a better choice than 32 bit 33mhz PCI cards are.

Check out the Corsair and Antec power supplies, best to look for a 500w power supply

The 3100/E310 has an open back panel, you can install most standard generic stock ATX power supplies, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin motherboard main connector, with or without the on/off switch and two SATA power connectors.

You should be able to buy this from a local computer store.

The instructions for replacing the power supply are here. <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Your e310 system and processor should be fine.

Thanx...

so any one of these video cards  with a replacement "Antec 500w power supply", should allow for this Upgrade on this E-310....correct?
