Dimension 4700 Compatible video cards

I've been looking to update my video card for my dimension 4700 desktop.  I was lucky enough to have a spare ATI x700 Pro to do a test to see if the dimension 4700 would accept this; and after reading multiple threads and after my own problems of making it operational, I was wondering if there is a listing by Dell that shows all/any compatible video cards.  I've seen that the geforce 6600 works well, but which one?  GT/non-GT, etc.?  What are my options? After reading the amount of problems with the ATI video cards on here, I want to make sure that the video card I purchase will operate with my computer.

Thanks all!

The Dimension 4700 will accept any standard PCI-Express video card.
Only the low end Dell systems have experienced problems with ATI PCI
cards.  The 6600GT is a good choice.

Then why when I had installed the ATI X700 PRO PCI-E video card, the monitor wouldn't even recognize it?  The fan starts off at high speed.  I have flashed the dell A05 bios, and still nothing.  I have seen multiple forums discussing the dimension 4700's inability to be video-card friendly.

But hey, if you can give me some instruction to getting this X700 to work with my 4700, it would be greatly appreciated!  I would strongly prefer to use this video card!

I do not know how you have tried to install the card.  Did you enter the Set-up
(BIOS) and set the Primary Video?  Did you disable the On-board Video in the Device
Manager?

Guys, I have the same problem... the fan just went on and turn the PC on by itself; however, nothing display on the screen. When I purchased the 4700, I have order the x300 SE PCIe... the onboard video option is already disabled. That means... it was working with the X300 SE but not working with this X700 Pro PCIe. I am able to return this card to Circuit City as well.. but if someone can offer a solution, I would like to keep it.... $119.00 after rebate - good deal...

Hey,

I believe its a power supply issue with the 4700.  I was told in order to use the more power hungry video cards that it would require a power supply update.  $150 for a 470W @ this site:

I was the previous X700 complaint...but I am now looking at the EVGA 7800 GT.  Since I have an extra x700 (which still hasn't been put to use), I am going to update the power supply in the coming future and see if the x700 works prior to my purchase.  I've heard Multiple issues with the X700's compatibility with the Dim 4700.

As has been mentioned 9 trillion times on here if you do a search, the Radeon x700 line is NOT fully PCIe compliant. THAT is the problem with it and the Dimension 4700. There is NO reason to upgrade a power supply to use it, as the included power supply provides more than enough power.

Thanks for the feed back.. I talked to Dell's tech support yesterday, calculated the power usage and claimed that the power supply need to be upgrade. However, he also indicated that it is not normal for the computer to start by itself which I am still puzzling.

So, I don't need a new power supply for the EVGA 7800 GT???  It claims it needs a 450W source, and the 4700 is equiped with a 305W.

The 7800GT will probably work. I don't remember for sure, but I think people are using it with that power supply, and I know people are using the 6800GT with it, which draws a similar amount of power.

Oh, and no way does a Geforce 7800GT need a 450 watt PSU. Some companies say things like that so they don't get calls from people wondering why they're having trouble with the card on their $30 PSU.
