Dimension 5150 memory upgrade

Trying to upgrade my Dimension 5150 from 2 gigs to 4 gigs of memory with Windows XP Pro SP3. Yes, I realize XP will only recognize 3+ of that memory. I ordered a 2 gig kit from Crucial. With all 4 gigs installed, system hangs at Dell start screen. I updated BIOS to A07. Still hangs. Dropped to 3 gigs installed and BIOS recognizes it, but Windows won't start. I looked for a motherboard number after seeing other posts on this kind of subject and under the brand name Connolly I see E187242.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you.

I have an E510 which is identical to the 5150.

The motherboard part number is something different.  e.g. on mine it's 0HJ054.  There is also a motherboard P/N that starts with 0RY...  There were several different part number boards used throughout the production cycle of these PC's, all were Dell custom boards made by Foxconn.

Do you get any beeps when you power on?  That is the usual first indication of memory problems.  The Crucial memory should work OK, assuming you bought the correct memory,  as that is what we suggest for non-Dell memory.  However, we have also seen problems of compatibility between brands and if it's not all the same brand there can be problems.  I don't know if that is your problem or not.

No beeps at power on with 4 gigs, just hangs at Dell splash screen. I tried using 4 1 gig sticks of new Crucial memory so as not to mix it with the older stuff. Still hangs at Dell screen. With 3 gigs it attempts to boot. I get the big Windows splash screen, then it stops at a black screen before the "Welcome" screen appears.

And the 5150 may have any of these Dell motherboard part numbers, too:

WG261, 0WG261, J8885, 0J8885, RD203, 0RD203, KF623, 0KF623

Try each module alone in slot 1 to see if you can ID one that's bad.

And after you reinstall 4x1 GB, remove the motherboard battery and press/hold power button on tower for ~30 sec. Then reinstall the battery (right-side-up!) and see if it boots now.
