Dimension 5150 windows XP Pro

I got clobbered by a virus the other day, even though I have anti-virus SW.

I was going to just fdisk the hard drive and reinstall windows, but I was told it wouldn't work because Dell requires some specific drivers.

I ended up paying someone to do it for me. I notice on my 5150 there is a c:\dell\drivers location. Is all I have to do is to copy c:\dell\drivers onto a CD, fdsk and reinstall windows, and drop in c:\dell\drivers?

Under c:\dell\drivers there is Audio and Chipset. When/if the time comes that I must reinstall, should I run the exe files in Audio?

Thanx,

Gary

You can download to a CD or flash drive the needed drivers for your 5150 and then install upon reinstallation of the operating system.  The process is described here:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&cs=19&docid=1A0C0937D62A8739E0401E0A55174744&journalid=4F1F82483DC811DBAE564F9328EE04A4&l=en&s=gen

The latest drivers are located here:

But before you do that, you might finds that your system has PC Restore already installed, which can return the system to "factory new" condition with just a few clicks, once you have backed up your data files.  Depends on the date of manufacture, but worth a try, as described here:
