Dimension 8400 has a blinking amber light and will not start.
Computer works fine at the start of the day. If I leave the PC on, it will switch itself off after a few hours and the power light will blink amber. It will not restart.
If after using the PC for a few hours I switch it off and then try to restart it later in the day it will not start. The amber light will be blinking.
If I leave the PC off overnight it starts ok. Any suggestions please?

It sounds like a power supply problem, according to the manual. Generally blinking amber power light is a power supply failure. There is a small chance it's something else, but the power supply is the primary issue. The 8400 uses a standard ATX power supply, not a Dell proprietary so you can get one anywhere. Just make sure it has the needed motherboard connector (usually either a 24 pin or a 20 plug 4 pin) and the SATA and IDE connectors and minimum of 350 watts (400 would be better).

You need a power supply w/o the on/off switch, similar to the unit HERE
If a PSU with the on/off switch is installed, the back panel will have to be modified for it [cut a hole].

Happy to hear that replacing the power supply resolved the problem. :emotion-11:
