Hi,

I've never posted before, so I hope you will bear with me. Above are the specs to my nieces computer. When you push the button to turn it on, it clicks and does nothing else. With the computer open you can see the small green light on the motherboard. No fans, or anything else. Tried replacing the powersupply but it's still doing the same thing. I hope you can help me.

Check the diagnostic lights on the back of the tower and report back or look at your online manual here

PS You don't need to list everything in your post--just the basic info that applies to the problem.

The only light is a green flicker on the front panel for the power button. It doesn't go far enough for any of the diagnostic lights to come on.

Sorry about posting too much info.

Thanks but this was already tried before the power supply was  replaced.

The battery has never been replaced. I will follow the instructions you sent later this evening and let you know what happens. I have to go to a meeting.

Thanks for trying to help. I just hope it works.

When was last time the battery on the motherboard was replaced?

Try clearing NVRAM using instructions here for the 8400.

PAFlagLady

If the power light is blinking green, the computer could be in standby mode.

Press a key on the keyboard, move the mouse, or press the power button to resume normal operation.

PAFlagLady,

Is the power button itself actually engaging? Your problem could merely be a broken switch.

When I plugged it in the green light at the switch flickered and that's it, now it doesn't even do that. The power switch does nothing whatsoever when you push it.

PAFlagLady

As you have replaced the power supply and there are no diagnostic lights on the back panel and the power button LED does not stay lite.

If you are comfortable around computers, you could try the following, to test the power supply.

First, unplug the cord from the power supply, hold the power button in for about 15/20 seconds, open the case, unplug the 24-pin power connector from the motherboard and jump the Green wire to one of the Black wires, reconnect the power cord and power the system on, if power supply fan and hard drive run, then the PSU should be good.

Note: Do not remove any wires from the plug, use a small piece of wire or a paper clip as a jumper.

Power supply checks out and the system still does not work, again remove the power cord, hold power button in for several seconds to discharge the residue power, reconnect the 24-pin connector to the motherboard.

Remove all the PCI cards, the video card [if applicable], memory, all peripherals, disconnect the data and power cables to all the drives, then check that the front panel cable is connected to motherboard, with nothing else connected to the system, reconnect the power cable and power the system on.

If you do not get any beep codes or diagnostic lights on the front/back panel, then it's possible that motherboard has died.

Bev.

So it doesn't seem to physically click into the 'on' position?

No it doesn't.  How can  I  prove that's what it is? Any ideas?

Sorry about the long delay in replying PAFlagLady. I lost track of this thread. Don't know if you're still dealing with this issue or not but if you are you could try removing the front bezel assembly and pressing the power button directly on the front of the control panel.

I am still dealing with it and thanks for getting back to me. I will try that tomorrow. Have a dinner to get ready for now.

Sorry to be so long getting back to you. I'm in the flag business and Memorial Day came and went. It's been a very busy time.

You were right. The connector from the bezel to the switch was broken. If the switch itself is pushed, the computer works fine. Evidently, somebody thought you had to push hard enough to kill it.

Thanks alot for everyone's help.
