External Drive Purchase

I'm planning on buying an external hard drive replacement - my WD250 is fried.

So far I'm set on the following, but would like feedback or other options.

Seagate Free Agent Desktop 500 GB

USB2 connection only

7200 rpm

Size is not critical to me, but quality and speed are.

Thanks to shesagordie recommending the New Egg site I found it for $86.99.

A Hint: The 8200 does not support USB 2.0, only USB 1.1, while a USB 2.0 drive will work, it will be at the slower 1.1 speed.

For USB 2.0 you need to buy a PCI USB 2.0 card, this will give USB 2.0 ports on the card only, all the USB ports connected to the motherboard will remain USB 1.1, including the ports in the front panel.

Check out the card here.

Bev,

Thanks for your input.  I had purchased and installed a PCI USB2 board a couple of years ago with 4 ports, so I'm in good shape from that end.

My main concern is the reliability of this drive.

Mike.

Seagate does make good hard drives, but unfortunately there's no way to predict their reliability. :(

Hence the reason for warranties and the Seagate Free Agent 500gb has a 5 year warranty.

I've had new hard drives fail in less that 30days and yet I'm still using a 7 year IDE Maxtor hard drive in an old system.
