GX 740 upgrade to PHENOM 9600b

I would like to know if the first generation AMD PHENOM processors will work in the am2 socket of the optiplex GX 740?

Will second gen phenom processors work as well?

Also I have been told that the PCIe x16 slot will accept PCIe 2.0 and will be able to operate them without problems is this true?

Thank you guys.

SORRY IF these are dumb questions.

Did you update the BIOS before installing the processor?

A Solid Amber power button LED, indicates:

Quote, 'The Dell Diagnostics is running a test, or a device on the system board may be faulty or incorrectly installed'

Have you checked the four Diagnostic lights on the front panel?

The Optiplex 740 Troubleshooter and Diagnostic Guide, is HERE

Try reinstalling the *old* processor that you replaced and see if the Optiplex 740 boots up correctly.

Sorry, but it looks like the AMD Phenom X4 9600 processor is not compatible with the Optiplex 740.

I have turned the desktop on and I cannot accurately identify which numbers are illuminated.

If i were to guess I would say that none of them are illuminated. as there is some residual light  from the power and networking lights.

but other than that i have no clue.

the fan is running the light on the mobo is normal the wireless card lights are working normally the ethernet connector lights are fine.

im lost :(  and i was so excited to have a quad core doubble :((

initally while it started booting the light on the front was yellow then the machine made a beep sound then changed to green and booted normally.

This happened in less than a second

reinstaled the old athlon processor X2 2.o ghz

boots normally without any problems.

others have used the same processor in this computer and stated that it worked.

THere are 4 phenoms that are proven to work on the 740.    so how do we solve this problem?

is it a power issue? that is what Ive been reading.

so why would installing this processor cause a power issue?

would I have to reset the power avaiable to the processor?  do i need a more beefy supply?

I believe there is a solution to this problem.      lets find it :)

thank you,

Jason

Jason.

Upgrading the power supply will not help.

Try posting this issue in the AMD forum HERE

AMD seems to think that the 65 watts supplied to the cpu is the problem.

how do we increase this?

what is really perplexing to me is that the computer registers no problems.

No error codes no lights NOTHING.

so what does the orange light actually mean?

As far as I know the power to the CPU cannot be adjusted on a Dell motherboard, as it requires a different BIOS code to set the CPU voltages.

BEV first let me thank you for all that you have done. I appreciate it.

Second I think that I have found the problem with this cpu swap. I do no have the enhanced version of the mobo so I dint think this swap will work.

But the perplexing think is that even though the bios screen does not say i have an enhanced version, the serial and model number of the board say that i do?

:(

I really want this to work

Sorry to hear that, but if you correct, it could be the answer.
