Graphics card upgrade for Dell Inspiron 530

Hello all,

I'm just wondering what is a good video card I can put in my Dell 530 Inspiron.

It was upgraded about 18month ago with a new PSU (550W) a Core 2 duo 3.33gz, 3gb RAM and a 9800GT Video card.

My Card now is lagging a bit in new games that are out, I was just wondering what card would be suitable for high setting on games such as Rift.

I know that my motherboard is one of the earlier ones so a quad core CPU is out of the question, just to keep that in mind.

Thanks all

It is true that the GTX 460 is a better card and if you want to play at 1920 x 1080, it is probably a better buy since it is possible to get the 768mb version for the same cost HERE.  How well it will work with your Core 2 Duo CPU, I'm not sure. You may get a bottleneck if you have a lower-end C2D.  The recommended card for Rift is a GTS 250. The GTX 550 Ti is a step above this and the GTX 460 is a couple steps ahead.  The 1GB version of the GTX 460 might cost $40 - $50 more.

I would give the Nvidia GTX 550 Ti a try as shown HERE.

Here is what someone said about it:

Pros: Shorter than my old GTX 280 Superclocked by about an inch or so. Much lighter (About half the weight). Uses half the power at only 20 amps. But it actually seems to have higher performance. I was surprised because at first I thought it was just going to be a really cheapo card just by how it looks and feels, but it runs pretty well so far.

I played Rift on Ultra settings at 40-60 FPS which isn't too bad. It's only been a couple days though so I'll have to wait and see how it does it the long run, if it holds up well I might get another.

I've had a look into this card seems to get mixed reviews. Will it be ok on my 1080p monitor (res 1920 x 1080) or do you think it will struggle?

Thanks for the speedy reply though :D

Oh a little side note how would the GTX 460 compare? or would this not work in one of the earlier Dell 530 Motherboards?

As it seems many forums seem to say "If you thinking of getting a 550 GTX  your better off with a 460 GTX

Ok, thanks for the advice buddy, it's much appreciated :)

I'll go with the 460 GTX 1gb and see how it runs. If it does cause a bottleneck I may have to get a new Mobo and Case but I'll cross that bridge when I come to iy.

Thanks again.

Lee.
