Help I can't run defrag or scan disk

I am a total technofobe. I have been having lots of problems with slow running and games freezing. I tried to run defrag and scan disk. With defrag I went to run typed in defrag the black box opened then disappeared and nothing happened. With scandisk I typed it in the run box and it didn't recognise the command. I have defraged before with no real problem. I have a Dell Dimension 2400. Any advice would be most helpful.

Many thanks

Matt

Have you tried:

1.Go to Start > Run
2. Type 'CMD' then 'ENTER'
3. Type chkdsk C: /F
4. When asked to run it at boot time, type Y and then Enter.

Note: Space between C: and /F

Make sure your 2400 is clear of dust buildup inside. Overheating will cause the CPU to slow down and possibly the GPU (video) to freeze under load.

Slowdowns can also be caused by malware; do you have antivirus protection installed?
