How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running.
32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB.
To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found here.

Do you know what configuration you have right now?  If you have 2.49GB, then you probably have two 1GB modules and two 256 modules I would think.  You would have to pull the two 256mb modules out and put in your two new 1GB modules which will give you a total of 4GB.  This is your max.  However, with an older system running XP, 2GB is plenty.  Your 32-bit operating system will not be able to use 4GB anyway.  It usually works out to be around 3.2GB.
