Increasing RAM

Can anyone tell me if and how I can increase the RAM on my Dimension 3100 it is currently only about 248MB.

The E310/3100 supports a maximum of 2gb [2x1gb modules] of memory, see HERE

You are looking at the wrong listing for RAM. No such amount as 248mb. Go to Control Panel, System and see the actual ram amount. You should post your operating system for more specific answers and explain what you mean by RAM. RAM is random access memory--the amount of memory that is installed on the motherboard.

Easiest way to figure out what RAM is compatible is to use a reputable online vendor like Crucial.com (link below) - either select your model or use their system scanner to see what your options are.   For XP on an older system 1GB total is usually plenty, though with the 2 memory slots you could go up to 2GB total (1GB per slot):
