Is video upgradable on E510

Hello,

Question to owners of Dimension E510. I can see initial configuration has an option only of 2 different video cards (ATI), my question is wether that video card is embedded in motherboard? If yes then wether PCIE slot is still available on motherboard for another video card since I check if I can put a better video card for gaming into that system.
Thanks,

The E510 has Intel 950 intergrated video. It is available with two different PCI-E cards as options. (at the time I bought mine)  The X300 PCI-E and the X600 PCI-E.   Both these cards are not good for Gaming and neither is the intergrated graphics.      You should buy it with whatever is the no-cost option and add a aftermarket Nvidia 7600GT after you get it for Gaming.

You mean those cards which are selectable in addition to built-in card? What is the point then giving a choice for those mediocre cards if there is already one on a motherboard. Strange..

It's all a matter of degrees, they are both slight upgrades from the onboard Intel.    But are not real Gaming Cards.   Although the X600 could be used for moderate gaming.   The E510 isn't marketed as a Gaming PC but as a Media PC.   The XPS is the Gaming line.  The E510 would have to be up- graded with aftermarket components to make a real Gaming PC.

My question is with the dual core processor, is the PSU the standard 305 or is beffed up to handle the processor.  I ordered the system last week and I even went to the Dell Store at our local mall and told the sales rep I would buy to PC from him right now if he could get me a different Video card.  He told me it was not possible, witch leads me to believe that the system comes with a small PSU.

I have a 350w PSU in my old PC that I can throw into it but I am certian it would require me to modify the back of the case becuase the PSU has an on / off switch.  I may end up doing this anyways because I don't think the ATI card is going to give me the performance I am looking for, and I put several extras on the system and I am not for sure the PSU will hold up as is.

All the E510s no matter what the options have the same 305 Watt PSU. The PSU also does not have a 6 Pin PCI-E power cable to supply power to high power cards that have the external connection on card.

The Nvidia 7600GT is a good card for this PC as it has pretty good power and doesn't require external power.  If you try to power cards that need a external power connection you will have to use 4 pin molex Y cable splitters and get power off of a optical drive.

A better solution would be to upgrade the PSU to a BTX one like in my E510. It's a easy fit and has pleanty of power for the higher power cards and has the external power cable.
