Leveraging the XPS 8700 SE 2TB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive 6.0 Gb/s + 256GB SSD hard drive in windows 8.1

So the new hard drive is very snappy, but how do I make installing additional programs "transparently" recognize that they should install to the D:(data) drive rather than the C:\ host?  I am thinking specifically of programs like drop-box, one drive, Google Drive as well as programs like office 2013, visual studio and SQL Server.  Additionally, Windows has OS level folders (pictures, movies, documents, etc) associated with the user profile that take up quite a bit of space.  I don't want to have basically 256 G of "usable" space because that is where the programs normally install the program files (depending on the program, the data files might be pretty small in comparison to the actual program files used to create and maintain them.
