Memory cards for Dell Precision 690 Workstation

I have a HP, and the memory card says: 1GB 1Rx8 PC2 5300U 555-12-D1, and was wondering if I could use these in the Dell Precision 690 Workstation. The Dell card is: 1GB 2Rx8 PC2 4200F 444 11 BO. The Dell is using buffered, and the HP is unbuffered.. Im not sure of the difference. The Dell has 2gb (2x 1gb), now and I want to increase it.

No, you can't.  The 690 requires Fully-Buffered ECC memory.

Memory comes in ECC (servers and workstations) and non-ECC (desktops and laptops), and ECC comes in Unbuffered and Registered - and there used to be Fully-Buffered.  NONE of the ECC types are compatible with each other.  Some systems can use EITHER Unbuffered (UDIMM) OR Registered (RDIMM), but NOT both together.  Fully-Buffered DIMMs will not fit in UDIMM/RDIMM connectors, and vice versa.

You probably didn't match them properly.  Which slots do you have each DIMM in?

Yes, each white slot is the first of two slots per channel (the corresponding black slot is slot 2).

Try putting the two 2GB DIMMs in the first and second slots and the 1GB DIMMs in slots 3 and 4.  If that doesn't work, try each DIMM in slot 1 by itself to make sure you don't have any bad ones.  You might also try 2GB in slots 1,5 and 1GB in slots 2,6.

okay.. this is whats going on... I have the 2 X 2GB, in the first and second, WHITE slots. then I have the 2 X 1GB, in the 3rd and fourth WHITE slot.. as I booted up the system, I F2 to bring me into boot mode.. I ck the memory info and see it says 6GB installed.. I look at the DIMM 1 & 2= size 2GB, rank 2, ECC yes, type FBD, and organization x4..  in DIMM 3 & 4= 1GB, ECC yes, rank 2, type FBD, and organization x8... NOW, when I go to ctrl panel, I ck system and it says 3GB RAM. Im guessing this isnt right???

What OS/version are you using? 32-bit or 64-bit?  3GB "might" be right ... your hardware is seeing it all.
