Memory upgrade for Dell Dimension E520

I recently purchased a second hand Dell Dimension E520 and the configuration that I bought had got an Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz Processor in it and the motherboard has a model number of 'E210882' and is a SKT775.

After some previous help on this forum, I have upgraded the CPU to a Core 2 Duo but now I'd like to upgrade the ram. I have read in some places that the computer supports 4 x 1GB sticks of ram.but all the ram I've tried doesn't work. I've just been to http://www.crucial.com/uk and their website says it'll take 4 x 2GB sticks but they don't work either.

Can anyone help?

Hi Gazfocus,

Are you going to tell us what kind of RAM you tried? Obviously, we can't tell you anything about the RAM for that system you haven't already seen on the Crucial site.

I've tried quite a bit of different ram. I was hoping someone might have this system with 4GB Ram in it that could tell me what ram they used.

I will try and find out model numbers for the ram I tried later.

Thanks

Assuming you are using DDR2 PC2-5300 non-ECC (which you didn't happen to mention), and assuming you are installing it correctly, and assuming you're not using some cheapie brand, there's no way for me to tell what the problem is.

No not necessarily. The memory controller is getting confused with this ram and there may be no down clocking SPD's programed into the ram sticks.

if it was infact DDR2 PC2-6400 non-ECC, shouldn't it just downgrade to PC2-5300 anyway?

Hello all........this my first post :emotion-2:

I know this is an old post, however Im upgrading myself at the moment. Already done the Ram and your board can take 8gb I know because I have the same model. Go to www.offtek.co.uk and you can down load a tool that will tell you what ram is required before you buy it. Also offtek's prices seem about right.

Lots of people and sites claiming they know it all say it can only take 4gb...thats not correct just upgrade your operating sysytem to 64bit instead of 32bit and presto!!!! full 8gb usable.

Enjoy!
