N-vidia Drivers
with dell's nvidia drivers, there are not many controls in the dispay/advanced settings, like for gamma and brightness.. are there settings for gamma in the other drivers available for nvidia cards?

You should get more options with the drivers from www.nvidia.com

My Dell FX5200 card is able to work with the Forceware driver, which has those settings and more. I only use the Gamma (using the monitor to control brightness). The trick is to find a good screen to do the calibration. I like the information on this site: http://www.aim-dtp.net/aim/calibration/index.htm. Also, games run better with the new driver. :-)
