Need Win7 (32bit) driver for AD1885 sound chip found in a Dell Dimension 4400 please.
Hello.
A friend of mine has a Dell Dimension 4400 with a service tag number of <ADMIN NOTE:Service tag removed per privacy policy>
that he is having a problem with.
He has upgraded it from XP to Windows 7 (32 bit), but the only drivers available on the Dell support site are for XP and 2000. Since XP is the more recent OS, and I failed to find any audio drivers via Google for the on-board sound chip he has (AD1885, according to the technical documents, the AD standing for "Analog Devices"), I directed him to attempt to install the XP driver package via Compatibility mode, although I had a hunch this would almost certainly fail.
It failed.
Is there a Windows driver for this exact sound chip?
Is there a more recent Dell system that supports either Vista or 7 that uses this sound chip, or possibly a close variant, that has a driver I can try?
Or must I tell him to install a PCI sound card and to forget about getting on-board sound working?
Thanks!

Most users that want sound for unsupported systems install a Windows 7 compatible sound card. The cusom implemented sound systems such as this require Dell drivers as non-Dell will either not work or not work correctly.

A Vista or Win7 driver for an AD1885 from 2002 is probably a lost cause.
If it were the ADI198x, Dell did offer Vista drivers for some models (see HERE) - but those models date to 2004 and later. Seems there were lots of variants of the 198x, but that list appears to include only PC's using the newer HD audio standard. The 1885 uses the older AC97, so it's highly unlikely the drivers are cross-compatible.

Hi Sweetbearcub,
Wow, Windows 7 on a Dimension 4400. That's impressive.
For drivers, I would search the MS legacy driver site. I think that's your best shot.
Good luck!

The only way I have seen this to work is to upgrade in place from XP to Vista and then Vista to 7.

Thanks. I was toying with the idea of just short-circuiting the whole problem and installing a PCI sound card, and it looks like that is going to be the best solution.
And yes, Windows 7 on a Dimension 4400 is.. shall we say.. "not fast". I tried to convince him to roll back to XP, but he insisted.
