if thats the case and there is no solution, ill send the XPS 720 back i dont need this  or want to turn off anything on a $5000 Machine.  i have a HP Blackbird coming on Oct 15th. I still cannot figure out why its happenig as the only thing ive been running when it happens is the internet no apps running.  and do u lose your sound after the screech happens?  ill give it a week then ill send it all back . just happened again..  my goodness..as for the forum revamp its kinda like Burma , hide the evidence , don't discuss , cut all communications.

I believe that is the "Screech of Death" and apprantly only happens with Dell X-Fi cards.  When there was a full XPS board, there was an Audio section in it that had tons of posts about this issue.  Only god now knows where those posts are since Dell effed up the boards.

I will say that I do have the problem rarely.  Usually only occurs when I run Media Center and Windows Media Player at the same time.  To solve it I turn off my speakers, and close the windows to both programs.  I hope this helps.

Yes I do lose all sound but, closing the program that caused fixes it and as I said I get it very rarely.

When the screech happens i lose all sound and must reboot also  the X-FI CMSS-3D surround settings are reset,  Stereo Envelopment  slider moves to the top postion therefour  my 5.1 sound  plays only the left and right speaker , no centre or left back or right back , i have to reset the Stereo Envelopment slider to the center {middle} after a reboot

Guys..
While this is an issue with Dell's boards, it is not exclusive to Dell.

It seems to be a problem with Nvidia SLI machines and Creative X-Fi.
I have a retail X-fi card, and it used to happen to me all the time.  The only way I stopped it was to disable SLI.  This was frustrating, but since I used 2 monitors, it was a solution for me.

From what I can tell on research a year ago on it, it has to do with the SLI and the amount of PCI bus traffic messes up the XFI.  I don't have the details, but creative had complained that Nvidia was not following specs, or something to that effect.  Nobody that I know of had a solution if you used SLI and a XFI card.  Please somebody provide better detail.

thanks
