OptiPlex 745

Looked everywhere, asked everyone I know. And I've come up with no solution to my problem.

Problem: I receive an error msg in BIOS when booting up this Desktop (retired College PC) regarding the VGA cord being plugged into the wrong port.

The thing is, I can't find a VGA cord to fit this port: Dell website, Best Buy...nothing. Ive heard its some dell proprietary cord I have to order?? True?

PIC* (port above is how it sits now. I'm supposed to use the bottom one (data pins 'OUT')

Thanks for any and all help,

Hi GJackson242,

The pictures have said it all. Thank you for posting them!

There is a video card attached to the computer. Here look at the red highlighted rectangle below.

This white port inside the red highlighted rectangle is called the DVI port. This port sends out video signals and works exactly like the VGA. Now, either you need a DVI cable which you can plug it into the white color port on the back of the tower here and then other end to your monitor; provided if your monitor has this DVI port as well like it does for VGA.

If your monitor does not have the DVI port then either you need to get a monitor which has a DVI port or purchase a DVI cable. Now, if you do not want to go with either of these options, then you need to open up the tower and take this highlighted video card out and automatically the VGA port will be activated. This is how computer works. If you plug in a video card, it disables the in-built video card by default and you have to take the video output from the card. When you take the video card out, the default in-built Graphic Card gets activated automatically.

I would suggest, get a DVI cable if your monitor has the same white port on its back. How does a DVI cable look? Refer to the picture below.

NOTE: DVI Cable comes in different variants. When you go to purchase one, ask for Dual-Link DVI cable as your card has Dual-Link DVI. How do I know that? This picture below will answer this:

Hope this helps.

Hi GJackson242,

As per the picture, you have plugged in the VGA Cable on the right port. The port below (with PINS out) is not the VGA port.

Could you please let me know the error message in exact that you come across in BIOS?

Also, do you have a discrete video card plugged in into the computer that has another VGA port? If yes, then you would have to plug the cable there on the port of the video card. Also if possible, please put a picture of the entire back panel of the computer.

Awaiting for your response.

Hi Gabriel,

Haha..! :emotion-2: It was easy though! I bet you must be looking for a second VGA Port and that is why you happened to miss it.

Never mind, it does happen at times with me too. Bottom line is that the issue is now fixed and if you have any other queries or issues please feel free to reach out to us here and we will be more than happy to help you out.

Cheers!
