OptiPlex 9010 that had all the desktop icons disappear.

I have an OptiPlex 9010 with 8gb ram, 1tb hd and an Intel processor that runs 3.4ghz. It has been running fine till this afternoon when all of a sudden the desktop icons disappeared. It won't show any desktop shortcuts. When this used to happen on xp it meant reinstalling windows. Is there any trick to getting the desktop back on this one. I think I remember some security setting that can be changed to hide the desktop. Is that true or do I have to reinstall this one? Second thing I am wondering is there a desktop folder I can copy as I put things on so won't loose them again?

Do you see the taskbar and Start button?

Are the icons missing or just white boxes?

If you right-click the desktop and you see the context menu, click Personalize. On the right, click  "Change desktop items" and make the appropriate changes.

You can also try deleting the icon database.

And when it's fixed run chkdsk on the HDD and then scan thoroughly for malware to be safe.
