Optiplex 3040 MT Mini Tower Question about PSU upgrades and GPU Upgrades

Regarding the 3040 MT. The I-5 6500 version. The 3040 MT lists a PSU of 240 watts. I want to add a GPU. The Dell Social Media Support guy (from the Dell forums) said that the Nvidia GT 745 was one of the video cards tested.

Nvidia's site lists the GT 745 as a 55 watt GPU with a 300 watt PSU requirement for that 745 card. Yet the Dell team found no problems with the GT745. Can someone explain this for me?

I want to upgrade the GPU, but do not want to wreck something by doing so. The GPU card I really want is the GTX 1050 which is a 75 watt card but all other parameters are the same as the 745. Mechanically it will fit perfectly. The only issue is the wattage.

Second, is there some listed PSU upgrades available? Or perhaps adapters for aftermarket PSU's? How difficult is it if I wanted to upgrade to a more powerful PSU? Does Dell have that option with this computer?

I spent 32 hopeless minutes on Dell's support phone line listening to people read out specs from the sales brochure. Nobody, even in so called "tech support" could answer the questions.

Can ANYONE here please help me on this?

Our OEM (original equipment manufacturer) customized GeForce GT 745 X61TN is not the same card as the retail GeForce GT 745. The memory and clock settings may differ. That is the difference. But it is easy to remove our 240w PSU (power supply unit) and install a higher wattage PSU. Read through the Owner's Manual. It has instructions on how to do this. The retail Geforce GTX 1050 needs at least a 300w PSU. Another 3040 owner will need to post a retail PSU that has worked.

You would need a MODDIY adapter and have to remove the internal PSU and put it OUTSIDE the case.

The 3040 "mini tower" is the same chassis as an Inspiron 3650 and uses itty bitty teeeny weeeny power supply.  So replacing it would not be easy.

It also needs a 24 pin to 8 pin adapter.

I was looking at the Antec EarthWatts Green EA-380D Green 380W. Based upon my existing extra drives and realstic foreseeable upgrades that is 20 watts more than the Outervisions Power Calculator suggests I would need. Any foreseeable problems with using that and the moddiy adapter? Thanks!

Annoying with the 8-pin power. In the 7010 DT you can fit any TFX power supplyI'm running a 1050 Ti Low Profile in my Optiplex 7010 DT. See my vids on YouTube - Nor Tech

EarthWatts series might be a problem in a Dell.  They simply don't turn on.

No Idea why.
