Optiplex 320 runs a Core2Duo e6700 with 1066mhz FSB

In case anyone is wondering whether you can upgrade your Optiplex 320 to a 1066mhz FSB Core2Duo -- it appears the answer is yes!  The e6700 is a 2.66ghz Core2Duo with a 4mb L2 cache -- Conroe.  Bios reports the CPU type and speed accurately, and the machine booted Windows XP just fine.  System control panel also reports speed accurately.

I had flashed the bios with 1.1.12, before trying the new cpu.  I've also tried  an e2180 (2ghz Pentium Dual Core with 1mb L2 cache) -- no surprise that it worked fine as well, but the e2180 uses an 800mhz FSB, which I had thought was the limit.

According to various articles on the ATI Xpress 200 chipset, however -- it appears it can support the higher speed Core 2 Duo cpus.

In a few minutes I'm going to try an e6500, which is a 2.93ghz Wolfdale Pentium Dual Core.  Will let you know if that works...

The e6500 did NOT work in the Optiplex 320.  Couldn't boot to bios -- just a black screen.  The e6500 is a newer Wolfdale cpu -- perhaps that's why it doesn't work?  Too bad, though, since I love how the e6500 performs in my other Optiplex 330 machines.

Oh well -- it was at least satisfying to find out that the e6700 worked in an Optiplex 320!

Now if someone can tell me how to make the 320 capable of Dual Channel memory -- that would be appreciated!  Bios shows only single channel capability, despite having matched pairs of 1gb sticks installed.

Hi

I also have Optiplex 320.

It has OTY915 motherboard and e2160 chip

Found your item interesting as was thinking of better chip. but find no info for motherboard supported chips. What motherboard have you got installed?

How much improvement did you get? did you benchmark difference?  I am looking to upgrade on budget and need to be as sure as poss it will work.

Any info you have and prepared to share would be great

Hi Nick-

The sticker on my Optiplex 320 motherboard says:  CN-0CU395-70821-752-E1KD, REV A00.

The improvement in overall performance was noticeable with the e6700, but I think the most critical thing for the Dell Optiplex 320 is to download the latest chipset drivers from ATI directly.  Back when the system still had an E2180 cpu installed (and running Windows XP Pro) that was what made the biggest difference in overall system responsiveness.

Let me know if you need any other information...

This is great. I don't know how i haven't found this before. It's a year old! I had been searching for days and had given up. Good thing i searched again and found this. I own an optiplex 320 with a Pentium 4. The processor it has doesn't quite suffice for my needs. I wanted a core 2 duo but i didnt know if it would work. Good thing i found this. Will be very useful.

I apologize for bumping an old thread. But could it be possible for a core 2 quad to work too? such as the Intel® Core 2 Quad Q6700? It has the same FSB speed. Or is a quad-core just over the top for this hardware?

Stick with a Conroe family 800 MHz FSB chip and don't bother with anything higher.

I'm currently running a Core 2 Duo E4700 2.6 GHz chip on mine with a slight overclock (900 MHz FSB for a 2.926 GHz clock) and I've benchmarked the CPU to be running faster than what PotterManDan claimed to have gotten to work in the Dell Optiplex 320 (Core 2 Duo E6700 2.6 GHz/1066 MHz FSB).  <---Don't know how he got that one to work because my computer freezes at anything above 910 MHz FSB.

Hope that helps.

The one you listed. But i'm not going to be able to buy it any time soon. I just wanted to know what processor can work in there so i know what to get in the future when i can get it.

I am also interested like the rest of you guys in upgrading the processor in my 320. In response to the latest post that processor will not work with this computer because that processor has 45nm technology, while the board supports only 65nm technology. And looking at the responses above it seems that I can gather that the limit of the fsb is 1066Mhz and it only supports 65nm technology. Well its worth a shot I'll have to try and put the quad-core q6700 in it and see if it works.

Hi I'd like to upgrade my P4 proc in my 320 too. Did you manage to succeed with a quad core q6700?

tks

I am looking for a gigabit network card for my optiplex 320.

Can anyone offer suggestions?

Thanks,

I have a optiplex 320 here, and as long as you update the BIOS, it will accept a 1333MHz processor, I have an e6550 in this computer, that i am typing one; and it is much faster than the pentium 4/D that i tried....
