Optiplex 5040 & 7040 - ddr3L & ddr4 (2400mhz)

Hi All,

Looking at  towers in the current Optiplex range shows the 5040 is supplied with ddr3L 1600mhz ram  -  does anyone know if there's a particular reason for that older standard still being used?

On the outlet site there are 7040 towers (skylake cpus) advertised with ddr4 2400mhz ram  -  but won't those towers only be able to run their ram at 2133mhz?

The 5040 is positioned lower in the price scale, so less expensive DDR3L is used.

The CPU determines the memory speed -- so yes, the RAM will run at 2133 MHz with most CPUs.

Thanks ein63

The 5040 (ddr3l 1600mhz) is priced between the 3046 and  the 7040 models.

The cheaper 3046 and the dearer 7040 are both supplied with ddr4 2133mhz.

Could it be that the motherboard used for the 5040 is more dated than those fitted to other models (both cheaper and dearer) in this range of the Optiplex?

It could well be.  It  could also be an option for those with large populations of DDR3 systems looking to replace/upgrade/supplement with the same memory type they now have.

Thanks again ejn63 - I appreciate your advice.

Do you have a view as to why 2400mhz ram is now being fitted to 7040 models with skylake cpus  -  given that they can only run at 2133mhz maximum?

It's probably the most widely produced DDR4 memory (and therefore in greatest supply at lowest cost).

Thanks yet again ejn63  -  you have enlightened me on the 3 different speeds of ram used in the latest Optiplex range.
