Optiplex 755 Upgrade to 64 bit OS - BIOS upgrades?

I am trying to get my computer compatible with new programming for work and I need to install a 64 bit version of Windows 7 (currently running 32 bit of 7) I know that I need more RAM but I am told I need the mother board to be compatible with 64 bit. In BIOS it seems capable and everything I have read on this computer also seems so, but I am lost at how to do the transition. I need to upgrade BIOS and then update it to 64 bit capable? Then install 2 more GB RAM and re-install Windows?

Please help!!

Use XP 32 bit and download A17 then A21 then A22 and install in that order.

You cannot jump from A09 DIRECTLY TO A22.

ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE INSTALLED DURING THIS PROCESS WILL BRICK THE MACHINE.

It sits for a long time average 20 to 30 min without seeming to do anything.  If you shut it off during this you are bricked.

install A17 first. Here is the link ;

Then A21 ; http://dell.to/1599vyh  A22 ; http://dell.to/11jRh8F

You don't have to upgrade the BIOS to install a 64-bit OS. If you do want to upgrade the BIOS anyways, I suggest a DOS-formatted USB flash stick.

Now I am beyond confused. Microsoft support told me I couldn't do it because the motherboard says x86 - but Dell specs for this computer say it is compatible with a 64 bit OS... so I went to set the BIOS to x64 from x86 and there were no options to do so. I have been told I need to upgrade the BIOS but that's pretty high risk and now I don't need to?

Arrrggghhh!!

The hardware is 64 Bit capable and runs Windows 7 64 Bit without issues, we have a good 10 or so systems in our labs with this configuration - ignore what you were told by Microsoft support, the person didn't know anything about the Dell hardware you are using.

The BIOS revision you have is A09, while it should work directly on A09 without changes its still advisable to upgrade to A22 before Windows 7 64 Bit installation for increased stability. As mentioned above this might not work directly so you might need to update the BIOS several times to get to A22.

There should be no need to install Windows XP to update the BIOS, you can follow the instructions here:

You don't need to set anything in the BIOS. All you need to do is install the new OS.

Actually that's not right.  With 64 bit WINDOWS 8 OR 10 he has to enable EXECUTE DISABLE BIT NX in BIOS under security or it won't install.

Even then he has to have at least a PENTIUM D PRESSLER 900 SERIES.

Or Core 2 Duo.

I didn't have to do anything with my 3100 to allow the installation of Windows 8 x64, nor my GX620.
