Optiplex FX170 DVI Audio?
I tried connecting the fx170 to dvi monitor with speakers, but no audio. Control panel "sound" has one setting to switch to spdif output as default, but nothing there either (no sound). Does anyone know if this machine is even capable of carrying audio through the DVI? Thanks in Advance

And as far as I can see, it seems that DVI must support HDCP to carry audio.
Google search "dvi must support" for details...

HDMI Audio via HD PCI Audio Codec has been possible since the radeon 2K series and up on the ATI side of the fence, and Nvidia since the second revision 8800GT VIA an HDMI Video out , or via an DIGITAL connectionca from the HD AUDIO BUS onboard/soundcard on GPU. i dont think nvidia had a built in soundcard like ATI, until fermi. You cant get any analog audio from a DVI cable - you MUST have a DVI to HDMI adaptor (if its ATI, then an ATI branded one) and a HDMI cable. There are NO Monitors or TV's Whatsoever that have DVI AUDIO INPUT. Which Pins They use for Audio is anyones Guess but its NOT Standard and its not passive aka they likely use HDMI power and convert the signal.
There is NO DVI Audio standard.

Hi placy,
DVI(port) cable carries only digital video signals and does not support audio. You will need to connect a 3.5mm cable from the headphone out port to the monitor speaker to obtain the sound from the monitor.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Are you saying that DVI doesn't support audio, or that this particular machine doesn't support DVI audio? Online research states that DVI audio is optional, which is the reason for my inquiry.

HDCP is a VIDEO standard not an AUDIO standard.
There is no such thing as DVI audio.
High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP; commonly,
though incorrectly, referred to as High-Definition Copy(right) Protection)

Thanks everyone for taking the time to post and to clarify. I'm using DVI to HDMI and audio cables (2) for now, but also ordered the ATI adapter just for the hell of it.
