Optiplex GX270 New CPU, won't boot

I have a dell optiplex gx270 SMT with a socket 478 P4 2.40 GHz processor. I decided to upgrade it and bought a P4 3.0 CPU installed it now the tower won't boot. I have a steady amber light with no beeps. It should be compatible with the motherboard. and my BIOS is up to date, version A07.

The sSpec # is listed on the seller's eBay site, eg MPN  SLPM

It is also, etched on top of the processor.

http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/cs-016552.htm

As the system boots with 2.40GHz processor reinstalled and the BIOS upgraded to the latest version, that a good indication that the 3.0HGz processor is not compatible.

Hi Laura,

Dell has tested Optiplex GX270 with Intel P4 & Celeron Processors (Northwood & Prescott). Optiplex GX 270 was shipped with Intel 865G Chipset. For more information on this, you may refer to link: http://intel.ly/13RbQLR

Click on compatible products and you would find the list of the compatible processors. Dell does not recommend or offer processor upgrade but it is as your discretion in case you really wish to go  ahead with it. Warranty per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered under warranty , however we will continue providing support for other issues and parts.

There is a difference of Lithography, Core temperature, Voltage and Max TDP (P4 2.40 GHz processor and P4 3.0 GHz processor). You may try installing the processor shipped with computer and see if you face any issues with it. You may refer to service manual for detailed information on reseating processor:

ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_optiplex_desktop/optiplex-gx270_service%20manual_en-us.pdf

Copy and paste the link in address bar and hit Enter. Please ensure to follow safety instructions mentioned in manual.

There are diagnostic LED's on the back of system tower, you may also check the status of that. They are helpful in isolating the cause of failure. You may check an image below:

Please reply with information.

What is the sSpec number of the P4 3.0GHz processor you purchased?

Have you tried reinstalling the 2.40GHz processor and see if the system boots without any issues?

You should always update BIOS BEFORE Changing CPU.The

Socket 478, 3.06/533/512k Northwood is the fastest processor you can use for the Optiplex 270.

A search for "Intel 865G chipset" "supported processors"
on Intel's site produces a board with a similar description:

Here's one of the CPUs Speedstep listed for $13 including shipping.

Bev makes an excellent point: if the machine boots with the original CPU and not the new one, the new one is either defective or incompatible.

I replaced a P4 2.6 GHz processor in a Dell Optiplex GX270 with a P4 3.2 GHz processor that I removed from a Dell Optiplex GX 270 with blown capicators.  The BIOS was Version A6.

After installing the P4 3.2 the computer would not boot.  I then re-installed the original processor and the computer still will not boot.  The diagnostic lights on the back of the Optiplex 270 are all off.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If the power button light is lite, what is the colour and is it blinking, or solid?

FYI, I just upgraded to a P-4 2.8 ghz Northwood SL6WJ in a desktop GX270 and it works great. I was given the processor and took a chance on it working. It also has Hyper-threading which I enabled :emotion-2:
