Optiplex GX270

That power supply is for standard ATX desktops; you want something more like this.

I have been having trouble with my Optiplex GX270 lately. I'm pretty sure that it's the power supply. Obviously I am going to test it first before i buy a new one, which brings me to my first question. 1) What is the cheapest and easiest way to test my power supply? 2) And second, could i just buy a new one at best buy or such? If you are comfortable working around computers, you could try the following:

Note: The only 100% method of testing a PSU, is to install a know working power supply.

Unplug the cord from the power supply, hold the power button in for about 15/20 seconds, open the case, unplug the 20-pin power connector from the motherboard and jump the Green wire to one of the Black wires, reconnect the power cord and power the system, if power supply's fan and the hard drive run, then the PSU should be good.

Note: Do not remove any wires from the plug, use a small piece of wire or a paper clip as a jumper.

If you have an Optiplex GX270 Small Mini Tower, most standard generic ATX power supply with either a 20-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, that has no power on/off switch, can be installed.

Because the Optiplex GX270 has a closed back panel, when a PSU with the on/off switch is installed, you would need to modify [cut a hole] the back panel for it.

oh yeah, i forgot to mention i have the small desktop version. That probably has a huge difference on which power supply i can buy. sorry. but i will probably give that a try later today and post my results. Thanks!

Yep, it makes a difference, the Optiplex GX270 Small Desktop version, supports a Dell proprietary power supply like THIS
