Optiplex GX620 Pentium D 960 and Heatsink issues

I recently upgraded my Optiplex GX620 to pretty much the maximum hardware I could find as of late due to just wanting to have a decent med-core gaming rig.

I replaced my P4 HT 521J processor and stuck in a Pentium D 960. The only concern I have now is if the stock Dell heatsink and fan that the computer came with will be sufficient enough to keep the cpu and motherboard relatively cool. I even replaced the stock power supply that the computer came with. Am I able to change the heatsink and fan for an after market one or is the Dell stock heatsink/fan combo what I am stuck with?

This is currently the computer hardware/specs I have on it. Oh, it's the Mini-Tower form of the gx620 too.

Intel Pentium D 960 3.6Ghz CPU

XFX Radeon HD6670 1GB DDR5 GPU

4GB DDR2 PC-5300 Ram

480w Logisys Power Supply model PS480D

1T Western Digital 7200 RPM HDD

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Series sound card

The default heatsink and fan will work fine.

Plus, the heatsink and fan are Dell proprietary units.

I almost figured that they'd be proprietary units, the reason as to why I was asking though was because I have already seen a few temperature warnings for the CPU in my Bios log.

Another concern was not being able to buy a complimentary fan for the case itself to remove some of the hot air inside :(

The default Aluminum heatsink and fan are not Sufficient.  Thats why there is a Copper Heatpipe

High performance version.  The Power Supply will need to be updated also.

From the 620 FAQ

Both versions of Pentium D 960 (SL9K7 - D0 - 95W) or (SL9AP - C1 - 130W) will need DELL Performance Heatsink J9761. I also recommend Arctic Silver 5 (Thermal Paste).

I had actually already read that thread but I was unsure only due to some people stating that the original heatsink would be enough.

Now you also mentioned that the fan as well wouldn't work? Meaning I'd have to replace that too?

I have a dell gx620, and just upgraded my pentium 4, to a pentium D 3.4ghz and have no problems, the stock heat sink is working fine and the fan is as well.

The 130W version is the problem.

You have a 945 not a 960 and its likely the 95W part not a 130W part.

The 960 130W CPU is what we are talking about.

Hello!

Last Saturday I've upgraded my GX620 with Pentium D945 (rev D0 -95Watt).  I run stress test from MyDell software for CPU, it load CPU to 99% and passed after ~15min. Cooler run at 1500-1900rpm. No issues already for 3 days. What was your problem?

Must be the copper version for 130W Cpu

Not the default Aluminum heatsink.

Thats why there is a Copper Heatpipe High performance version. The fan is the same only the heatsink needs replacement.

DELL OptiPlex GX620 - FAQ - Frequently Asked (and answered ...

HEATSINK D9729     SHROUD J9761  for the tower.

There is also a copper Heatpipe version for the Desktop and SFF models.

My CPU Pentium D 945 rev D0 is 95Watt, hope Aluminum heat sink is enough.

CPU makes frequency switching from 2.4GHZ till 3.4GHz, it means without load power consumption can be even less 95Watt.

Also Cooler in idle state run 750rpm without any noise. Only for stress test for 15min it run on 1500-1900rpm

Unfortunately can't measure CPU temperature (BIOS or AIDA64 software...etc)

I've upgraded the former P4 to a PD 945, the stock cooler works, but the fan goes crazy in high cpu loads, I wouldn't stay more than a couple of minutes in this state.

Upgrading to the copper heatsink, or checking if that's possible to use a regular cooler system seem to be the best bets.

The copper heatsinks are not hard to find and they are not expensive.  I get them all the time on amazon and ebay. The 130w versions of the cpu are what the heat issues come from.

I answer to my own post just to say that with some thermal paste, no crazy fan anymore, in fact, it's quite quiet now, even while playing Minecraft or installing stuff, which would have made it crazy in the first place.

So, now here's what's in my Dell Optiplex G620 :

Pentium D 945 CPU, with stock cooling system (just cleaned and added thermal paste).

4 GB or RAM, which is the max possible, unfortunately, only 3,5Gb are usable, I think the BIOS saves 512Mo for its own use, and there's no way to change this, but that's still fine.

A Nvidia GT 610 graphic card with 2Gb of memory, passive cooling, and very small size, in the first place, I bought a Nvidia 8800 GTS with 512Mb, which is much more powerful for gaming, but it didn't fit in the case, so I put it in my mother's PC and I took her GT 610 instead, which is more than enough for working, multimedia purposes, and even some gaming, Minecraft runs well.

The OS is Manjaro Linux, which is quite light, responsive, user-friendly and with a good following, just forget about Windows on such PCs, Linux does better, with less ressources, and it's way safer, as it's always updated, unlike Windows XP, which has no support anymore. In fact, my only PC which still has Windows (10) is my gaming PC, because I have no choice, but unless you're a PC gamer, or working with software that doesn't exist or has no replacement on Linux, I just see no good reason to stick to Windows.

So, I'm quite happy with this PC, it does better that I've thought, someone gave it to me for a 40€ debt, and for just a few more bucks, I turn an almost useless PC to a solid working/multimedia PC, good deal :-)
